The "Noble" Stance of Ignorance?
Some things are complicated. Religion, Politics and Social Issues are difficult to sort through. I once knew a person who struggled for hours with the programming on a VCR, but when a religious question would come up, they refused to devote any mental energy answering it. I am going to make a bold statement by saying that the Soul, which by most reckonings exists FOREVER, should be more important than a football game or soap opera. Politics and certain Social Issues have some importance as well.
To some people, it may sound mysterious, or cool to hear a person rant about the "Religions of Men" or exclaim "It's all about money anyway", but to me; these statements only create more questions.
First Question: Have you actually sat down and thought about what you are saying? It is easy for us to make snap decisions from a few 30 second news blurbs, or a passing thought, but have we really spent time reasoning them through? We must discern the importance of an issue, and then give it the time that it deserves.
My other question is this: Do you realize how important it is to include yourself in the collective thought on important issues? For example; we can ignore the details of "Hate Crime Legislation" and then one day awake to find out that our opinion on certain things has actually become illegal. While we sit in blissful indecision, our rights are being yanked away from us at breakneck speeds. But let's take the "intellectual" non-committal approach and pretend we have evaluated all opinions, and smugly wave off any sticky questions as argumentative.
Yes Virginia, there are things we are intellectually responsible for; else our Souls, Community, and Social Values become in danger. This link is a good example of what could happen in our country if we keep silent about our Christian values and allow other religious cultures to fill the void.

No Authority
Whether the person or organization admits any Authority or not; whenever we believe a statement without checking the facts, we are under the Authority of the person(s) making the statement.
Think about about it: we are bombarded with information like no other culture in history. From the radio on our drive to work, to our coworkers giving us the low-down on the newest political situation. Periodicals, television and internet throw "facts" at us all day long. It would take us all of our sleeping hours to look into everything we came into contact with that very day. So, some of us believe only what is given with the best presentation; from charismatic speakers, attractive persons, powerful organizations, or rhetorical masters.
AND YET, most people in our culture are too proud to admit that we are under any Authority at all, like we are endowed as Americans to Supreme Independent Thought, while they fall for every well-crafted argument thrown at them.
